When economies go downhill, people indulge in small ticket items that make them feel good.
This was coined by Leonard Lauder when he noticed that lipsticks sales went up during tough economic times. Women were looking for frugal ways of indulging and showing off. For example, in the months following the September 11 terrorist attacks, lipstick sales doubled.
